This article originally appeared in The American Historical Magazine, 1896, Volume 1, Number 1. I did not realize until after I published the written article, that Dr. Stephen Foster is likely the same man that attempted to reanimate corpses in Knoxville. It would be quite strange if there were two men with the same name that were both professors at UT, were from New England, and were in Knoxville in the same century.
